Concept

Espoused value

A value an organisation officially professes, whether or not it can be found in its decisions.

The concept derives from Edgar Schein's culture levels and from Argyris and Schön's distinction between espoused theory and theory-in-use. An espoused value is not a lie; it describes an ambition. It becomes a problem only when the distance to practice is large and unnamed.
